Portugal looks to improve presence in South Caucasus
24/7/2010
Portuguese Foreign Minister Luís Amado was in Azerbaijan last Friday on a visit destined to improve Portugal’s presence in the South Caucasus, a region where Portugal has no diplomatic missions.
Minister Amado was the first Portuguese high government official to visit the region since his predecessor Jaime Gama in 2001.Despite some economic ties, namely through Portuguese energy company Partex, diplomatic links between Portugal and the region are scarce. Luís Amado also met with his Azerbaijani counterpart, Elmar Mammadyarov, to discuss geopolitical issues relevant to this natural gas-rich region. TPN/Lusa
