ETA suspect to appeal against extradition

Suspected ETA member Garikoitz García Arrieta has been extradited from Portugal to Spain but will appeal to Portuguese authorities, his attorney José Galamba told Lusa News Agency.

García Arrieta, 31, was arrested in Torre de Moncorvo (Northeast Portugal) in January. He was delivered to Spanish authorities at the Badajoz border control last Friday.

Attorney Galamba claims the Portuguese court that issued the extradition order acted “hastily and irregularly”, and vowed to appeal. He also claimed there have been “political pressures” over the Portuguese court system in trials connected to suspected ETA (a Basque separatist organisation) members.

García Arrieta was indicted in Portugal for the crimes of car theft and terrorism.
