According to newspaper Correio da Manhã 48 of those cases were taken to court for animal mistreatment, with another 13 being brought before a judge for animal abandonment.
A GNR source said more than 140 situations were reported last year in the Algarve. Nationwide more than 3,800 cases were denounced.
