Processions in Estarreja, Elvas, Figueira da Foz, Ovar and Mealhada were all cancelled because of the rain and wind.
Some have been postponed until this coming weekend and could cause ticket revenue losses for the local authorities into the tens of thousands of Euros.
Carnival festivities have been ongoing since last weekend but for many towns and cities the main event would have been on Carnival Tuesday.
Meanwhile the Loulé Carnival parade – said to be one of the biggest and oldest in Portugal – enjoyed its largest turnout of people in recent years on what was day two of the city’s festivities.
Last Sunday Loulé Mayor Vitor Aleixo said this year’s celebrations could be the most popular to date.
The theme of Loulé’s 110th carnival festivities was ‘piracy’, with most people who turned out, participants and spectators, dressing up accordingly.
Early figures from Sunday indicated that hundreds more tickets were sold to people wanting to watch the floats than on the same day last year, and Mayor Aleixo forecast a similar feat for the main event, which took place on Tuesday, 9 February.
This year 14 floats and some 700 dancers were involved in the parades which followed the theme ‘the big shipwreck’.
Float by float, humorous depictions of Portugal’s political, social and sport scenes travelled through Loulé’s streets.
“Carnival is spontaneous but we never know what surprises might emerge, but they always come from the spontaneity of people” he reflected.
