Carvalho said bets would be taken on foreign races to create a fund to develop competitions in Portugal and to breed horses in the country while the tracks were being built.
He estimates that bets on horse races could generate up to €300 million a year and create about 6,000 jobs.
Ricardo Carvalho added that although Portugal has noble breeds of horses, such as the Lusitano, there are no race horses so they would have to work with English pure-breeds, the traditional race horses.
Betting on horses could be introduced in next few years

Betting on horses is one thing but be warned the big bookmakers install casino gambling machines in their betting shops that make huge profits and at the same time create customers who become completely addicted as has happened in the UK. So Portugal beware.

Have I been asleep and woken up on April 1st?! How do I get a job like Mr Carvalho's? President of the Portuguese horse racing league when there is no horse racing in Portugal! Let's start by allowing Portuguese residents to bet on international horse racing first and forget the governments stupid idea of charging bookmakers 30% on their turnover! And please don't tell me "if you don't like it, go back to England". Let's just adopt a little common sense.
