CGTP deems country’s budget for salary increases 'insufficient'

The secretary general of Portugal’s largest trade union association, CGTP, Armenio Carlos on Monday deemed the country’s announced budget of €50 million for state salary increases “profoundly insufficient” and said the government had to take this issue further.

“It is obvious that this budget is profoundly insufficient,” Carlos said during a break in his schedule during a visit to the district of Castelo Branco, Portugal.

He added that the amount proposed by the government “is far from meeting what is justified and demanded.”

Carlos also said the government should show “openness and social responsibility,” and pointed out that the CGTP had called for a rise of 4% in percentage terms and 60 euros in nominal terms.

Portugal’s Socialist government, which is backed by the Left Bloc and Communist party in parliament, has already reversed many austerity measures imposed by the former centre-right government under an international bailout in 2011-2014.
