In February 2015, 446,332 more people went to the movies than in February last year, according to data from the Cinema and Audio visual Institute (ICA).
This saw revenue being pushed up by more than €2.4 million in comparison to February 2014.
This growth of more than 60 percent is in large part being attributed to the release of the ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ movie by British director Sam Taylor-Johnson, which drew at least 380,000 spectators to cinemas last month and generated around €2 million in gross revenue.
According to the ICA, February 2015 saw 1,198,431 people enjoy a movie in a cinema theatre, 446,332 more than in the same month of the year before.
Over the first two months of 2015, 52 full-length feature films premiered in Portugal, 25 of which were made in America with 22 being European-produced.
In the meantime, in terms of spectators and ticket office revenue, the figures are not so level.
The US movies generated 1.5 million spectators and €8.2 million in revenue, while the European movies tallied up an audience of 411,000 people and made €2.1 million in revenue.
As well as ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, the other two most seen movies so far this year in Portugal were Clint Eastwood’s ‘American Sniper’ and James Marsh’s ‘Theory of Everything’.
