According to figures made available by the Bank of Portugal, in October banks provided consumer loans worth €397 million, more than the €353 million provided in September and above the €390 million provided in October 2017, despite several warnings from the central bank which pointed to a risk of over-indebtedness among families.

In the first ten months of 2018, the total amount of new consumer loans provided to families rose 14% year-on-year, from €3.40 million in 2017 to €3.88 billion this year.

Portugal's central bank also revealed that banks lent €811 million to families for home loans in October, more than the €790 million lent in September, €810 million in August or the €706 million in October 2017.
