Dead whale washes up on Algarve beach

by TPN/Lusa, in Algarve · 04-01-2018 14:21:00 · 0 Comments

A sperm whale weighing more than 10 tons was found dead on Tuesday near the island of Armona, in the Algarve. The animal was taken to a landfill to be incinerated, a source at the navy told Lusa News Agency.

Olhão harbour master, Nunes Ferreira, said the whale was towed to Olhão at high tide by a lifeboat.
Nunes Ferreira said that the whale, which weighed 10.5 tons and measured 8.5 metres could be the same one that was beached on Monte Gordo beach in Vila Real de Santo António the previous Sunday.
The possibility that it is the same animal is not to be put aside, although there is no absolute confirmation, he said.
A sperm whale was beached on Sunday in Monte Gordo, but locals and the maritime police managed to get it back out to sea.
