Desperate times at Olhanense

A very public falling out between Olhanense President Isidoro Sousa and manager Sérgio Conceição, regarding the hiring of new players, looked to be the death knell for the young coach who took the Algarve side to a top-half finish in the Premier League last season.

But both parties could not agree on a ‘termination of contract’ settlement package after Sérgio Conceição and his coaching staff were looking for €150,000.
Conciliatory talks appear to have calmed the situation and the former Portugal international star will continue for the foreseeable future.
To add to the club’s problems the pitch at the José Arcanjo Stadium is in a dire state but a request to play last night’s opening game against newly promoted Estoril at the Algarve Stadium, Faro, was refused by the league.

It is hoped that the game against league champions FC Porto on the weekend of the 1/2 September can be played at the Algarve Stadium to allow for remedial work to the pitch to take place before the subsequent home game against Nacional at the end of September.
Last week’s 3-0 win over Louletano was a welcome relief from the troubles surrounding the club. Two goals from skipper Rui Duarte and a third from former Kilmarnock player David Silva settled the issue.
Two further signings have strengthened the squad. Central defender Nuno Reis, on loan from Sporting Lisbon and striker Alex Zahavi, who last season played for V.Setúbal. Zahavi, who was born in the United States, has a Portuguese mother and Israeli father and has represented Portugal at U17 level, USA at U20 level and Israel at U21 level.
He also gained valuable experience during two seasons with the Arsenal youth team. Nuno Reis, born in Switzerland, has played for Cercle Brugge (Belgium) for the last two seasons, on loan from Sporting.
