The Portuguese President has this morning welcomed the election results in the Netherlands as “good news” for Portugal and other EU countries which share Lisbon’s ideals.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa was speaking during the early hours of the morning as it emerged that the governing centre-right VVD party had easily beaten the anti-immigration, anti-EU Freedom party of Geert Wilders in the Dutch general elections.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte will now seek to negotiate with smaller parties in order to form a coalition government.
