The epicentre was pinpointed at 80 kilometres west of Peniche in the Nazareth canyon, and, according to the Portuguese Met Office no “personal or material damage was caused.”
The Met office said the quake happened at 12.44pm and was felt at its strongest in Mafra and in Lisbon.
