ANSR, which collects data from the PSP and GNR police forces, said that in January and February there were 20,033 road accidents, 130 more than in the same months of 2017.

According to ANSR, Setúbal is the district that recorded the most fatalities this year, with 18, followed by the districts of Porto (11) and Lisbon (9).

The district of Portalegre has not record any deaths in road-traffic accidents so far this year.

Road accidents caused 233 serious injuries in January and February, down 31 from the same period in 2017.

The ANSR also said that in the first two months of the year, 5,846 people suffered minor injuries, 20 more than in January and February 2017.

The figures from the ANSR are related to deaths recorded at the scene of the accident or on the way to the hospital.
