Fado singer Carlos do Carmo receives career Latin Grammy in Vegas

Carlos do Carmo, one of Portugal’s longest-established fado singers, has received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hollywood MGM Theatre in Las Vegas, Nevada, the first Portuguese artist to win a so-called ‘Latin Grammy’.

Other career award recipients this year are Willy Chirino, César Costa, O Dúo Dinámico, Los Lobos, Valeria Lynch and Ney Matogrosso.
“The ‘Board of Trustees’ of the Latin Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences decided unanimously to award Carlos do Carmo the ’Lifetime Achievement Award’, a prize that distinguishes the work of major figures in the international musical scene”, according to a statement.

In comments to Lusa News Agency, Carlos do Carmo said that at a time of hardship for people in Portugal, he was pleased if this “could give them some joy”.
The singer, whose career spans 51 years, said this was also an opportunity for other Portuguese artists to become known and in future also win awards.
