According to a report by Diário de Notícias, in just two years, 23,000 fewer people have stopped declaring rental incomes, despite the prices of rents going up; a drop of four percent.
Property owners and tenants associations say many proprietors have this year decided to make the most of the blossoming property market and sell their properties. On the other hand, others say, the impact of local lodging laws also played a part in tempting landlords away from traditional rentals and on to the holiday market.
This year’s IRS tax returns showed rents generated €3.05 billion, whereas that figures in 2015 was €30.1 million and was the first time rental income smashed the
€3 billion barrier.
In 2015, over 570,000 registered taxpayers declared income from rent; this year, that figure dropped to 546,770, or a reduction of over 23,000 people.
