The INE said that 61 percent of all emigrants were men, 97 percent were Portuguese nationals and 76 percent went to live in a European Union country.
The vast majority (94 percent) were people of working age and 36 percent had completed the 9th grade while 41 percent had higher education.
The INE also said that 29,925 people came to Portugal to live for a period equal to or greater than a year in 2016 (permanent immigrants), a similar number to 2015 (29,896).
