The fire that is demanding most resources is one in Couço, in the municipality of Coruche, in Santarém district, where the flames are being fought by 112 men and women, with 32 vehicles and two aircraft, according to information on the authority's website. The fire broke out at around 2.38pm in a forested area.

According to the ANPC, another major fire in Monforte da Beira, in Castelo Branco district, is in an area with brush. It broke out at 2.55pm and is being fought by 95 fire fighters with 22 vehicles and two aircraft.

Parts of Portugal tend to be afflicted with fires in the summer months. Although many are believed to be set by arsonists, their prevalence and extent depending on air temperatures and humidity, as well as past precipitation patterns.
