The prime minister made his remarks at a news conference at his official residence in Lisbon, after being questioned about the fact that media reports were once more suggesting that Centeno might be asked to take over from Jeroem Dijsselbloem of the Netherlands, whose party lost out in the recent general election there.
“It’s a choice that is up to the Eurogroup,” Costa said. “Portugal has not presented him as a candidate, but will also not shirk its responsibilities.”
Later, he said that if Centeno were chosen, that “will be a great honour for Portugal”.
The finance minister, Costa said, has everything it takes to preside over the Eurogroup.
“We’re not candidates, but we won’t reject it if the question is put,” he said.
