The former Portuguese internal affairs minister, Miguel Macedo, said today at his trial that the public prosecutor’s case was “groundless” regarding his relationship with the appointment of a liaison officer in Beijing.

Former internal affairs minister pleads innocence

Miguel Macedo, who is charged in the “Golden Visas” case of four crimes of mismanagement and influence peddling, spoke today for the first time in court since the trial began about a year ago.

Miguel Macedo also swore that “nobody had ever” asked him to appoint this or that liaison officer.

Miguel Macedo resigned as internal affairs minister in November 2014 after the public prosecutor charged him with allegedly favouring a group of individuals who wanted to profit illegally from the “Golden Visas” programme through lucrative real-estate deals.

The case also involves the former president of the registries and notaries institute António Figueiredo, the former national director of the border agency, Manuel Jarmela Palos, the former general secretary of the justice ministry Maria Antónia Anes, three Chinese businessmen and an Angolan, as well as Paulo Lalanda de Castro, who is involved in other alleged crimes involving the former prime minister Socrates.
