Founder of Algarve's first golf course, John Stilwell, dies

John Stilwell, who created the Algarve’s first golf course, has died at the age of 92.

Born in Portugal to a British father and a Portuguese mother, Mr. Stilwell launched golf in the Algarve with the building of the Penina resort back in 1966.

He told The Portugal News in a 2011 interview that the idea to build Penina came after one of his friends said there was little to do in the Algarve during winter.

According to Sul Informação, Mr. Stilwell died on Friday and his funeral will be held this Monday, at the Santo André Church in Penina at 3pm.

Comments:

Not correct. The first course was in Praia da Rocha alongside the Arade estuary part of which is now the marina.
