Built in 2004, the Faro Beach Nautical Centre’s pontoon has over the years undergone three interventions to be strengthened it and has withstood over a decade of stormy weather, but last week’s windy conditions apparently proved too much for it to contend with.
Currently unusable, a brand new pontoon is now in the pipeline to replace the damaged structure, which is estimated to cost some €180,000.
In a statement, Faro council said the situation “is urgent” but should still take at least another “six to seven months” to resolve “on the basis of competitive tendering.”
Until a definitive substitute is in place, Faro council has said it is “making every effort to find an alternative that allows the setting up of a provisional infrastructure, which allows all users a standard use of this sports facility.”
