Health agency says “above-expected” January deaths are due to “extreme cold”

The DGS national health board has said an “above-expected” number of deaths that occurred in January is due to the “extreme cold” affecting the elderly.

The DGS said that while the flu virus this year was of “moderate intensity”, the extreme cold topped up a yearly surge in winter deaths.

12,380 deaths were registered last month, until the 30th; 600 more on the monthly January average of the past five years.
