Heart problems continue to be the main killer in Portugal as they were responsible for 31,528 deaths, some 29.5% of the total, though this was 4.1% down on the 2012 figure.

Heart disease and related problems affect men earlier than women on average with the average age at death of 78.5 years for men and 83.5 years for woman.

Malignant tumours were the second main cause of death, 24.3% of the total, which was almost exactly the same as the year before.
