International Women’s Day was marked on Thursday with events throughout Portugal that highlighted women’s contribution to society where there are still gender inequalities in terms of wages and access to the labour market.

This comes as new figures reveal that Portugal is the European country where the wage gap between the genders grew most between 2011 and 2016. The United Nations organised the International Year of the Woman in 1975, and in 1977 proclaimed 8 March as International Women’s Day.
