Santana Maia Leonardo said the agreement was reached to “close the case” for the family of Rúben Cavaco.

"The victims considers he has received the correct compensation", the lawyer added without saying how much the ambassador had to pay for this out of court decision.

Santana Maia Leonardo did say, however, that it was a fair amount, considering that Rúben Cavaco is going to fully recover and not suffer any sequels of the attack by the ambassador’s twin sons.

The lawyer also said that the family did not file a complaint and the public prosecutor went ahead with the case because it was a public crime that does not need a complaint.

Rúben Cavaco was beaten in Ponte de Sor on 17 August by the two Iraqi youths, who were 17 years old at the time.

The ambassador’s children have diplomatic immunity, but the Portuguese government asked more than one for the immunity to be lifted so they could be questioned by the police.

The Iraqi authorities refused on two occasions “raising legal questions ".
