Established in February last year to provide palliative care and specific support to cancer patients, SOS Oncológico will this Friday be celebrating its first anniversary, “which everyone should be proud of, given that it is an area within health care that presents extreme difficulties and even various types of discrimination”, the council said in a statement sent to The Portugal News.
Aware of the association’s specific mission and objectives, Lagoa Council has supported the project by granting it facilities for its headquarters as well as helping with “whatever is asked.”
“The council and its executives are in solidarity not only with the creation of the Association but, above all, with what it can do to the benefit of patients who often feel financially unable to purchase medicines, wigs or other care,” the council elaborated.
To mark the association’s anniversary the photography exhibition ‘SOS Faces’ will be inaugurated on 7 March at the municipal library, with shots from 33 amateur and professional photographers.
That same day a Portuguese Guitar recital is to be held in the chapel of Lagoa’s São José convent by musician João Cuña. A donation is asked in lieu of an entry fee.
A celebratory dinner will also be held this Friday in Portimão at €20 per person, 25 percent of which goes to the association, and will feature Fado music from musician José Alegre and Cátia Alhandra as well as a poetry recital from Paulo Pires and Sónia Pereira.
