Portugal’s Left Bloc, one of the parties that makes up the parliamentary support base of the minority Socialist government, has called for the government to take “a firm position” against any bid by Israel to become a member of the Security Council of the United Nations.

After a meeting in Lisbon with the Palestinian ambassador Left Bloc leader Catarina Martins said Portugal “has always had a clear position on peace and the rights of the Palestinian people [and] must now have a firm voice” in opposing the Israeli bid. The next election for non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council is to be held in mid-2018, during the 72nd session of the organisation's General Assembly at UN Headquarters in New York.
