Some 2.1 million bulbs adorn the capital in 34 different areas to a budget of €320,000, which is in keeping with Christmas decoration budgets of previous years.
The budget for Lisbon’s New Year festivities, including live music and fireworks, comes in at a slightly higher €500,000.
A municipal Christmas market, an ice rink and four days of free concerts in Terreiro do Paço are other attractions being staged this year as part of the Christmas and New Year line-up of celebrations.
The festive programme was announced at the start of this week by Lisbon Council.
Lisbon Mayor Fernando Medina said he wants the capital’s New Year celebrations, which feature free concerts by Trovante, Richie Campbell, Carminho and D.A.M.A, among others, to be “a moment for everyone.”
