The ceremony was attended by the deputy mayor of Lisbon and sports councillor, Duarte Cordeiro, who announced the city had won the title after a visit by ACES specialists in November
“It was not a surprise. We always thought that Lisbon would win”, he said at the time, adding that Lisbon was competing against The Hague in Holland, where the committee had been previously.
“We have plenty of investment prepared for up until 2021, that we estimate to be around €26 million”, he said, adding that the investment would go on improving equipment.
Duarte Cordeiro told reporters that Lisbon “is a benchmark in Europe for welcoming large international events since the city hosted 309 large sports events between 2012 and 2016.
