Work along Lisbon’s main central stretch, on the Fontes Pereira de Melo Avenue, between Saldanha and Picoas, started on Monday. Two of the avenue’s six lanes will be closed off for three months as the work takes place, which is due to affect traffic travelling through the area. At the same time, work also began on Avenida da República near Entrecampos.
Work to improve traffic flow through the city and to overhaul its appearance, including more green spaces, wider walkways, a cycle lane and repaved road surfaces started on Monday and is expected to last nine months.
Lisbon Council said this initial phase would be the most disruptive.
The council has advised drivers to leave their cars at home and use public transport instead. The intervention comes at a cost of €7.5 million and will last up to nine months.
On Tuesday, Lisbon Council said that around 60 parking spaces are to disappear from the Fontes Pereira de Melo and República avenues due to the intervention, but extra parking would be created elsewhere.
According to Lisbon Council, the project will “change the way that everyone can enjoy the city.”
