The man was sentenced by judges at the court of Castelo Branco for murder and also has to pay compensation of €150,000.

The crime took place on the night of 9 March 2018, after the defendant went to the victim's house to talk about the end of their relationship.

They had been seeing each other for at least three years and the breakup happened three days prior to the crime on the initiative of the defendant, who had started a new relationship.

The public ministry had asked for a prison sentence of at least 18 months.

The head of the collective of judges explained that downgrading the crime to "privileged homicide" - which under Portuguese law means the crime is committed under violent emotion or despair - as requested by the defendant, was not an option because it was proven that the man had acted with "coldness" due to the number of stabbings (85 in total) and due to the fact that he had tried to hide some of the evidence of the crime.
