Every single fire department in the Algarve was called in to assist fire-fighters in dealing with the blaze, which at one point was described by the Mayor of Monchique as “out of control.” The fire was mostly combated in the area of Tojeiro, Marmelete. Due to the nature of the blaze and existing weather conditions, seven aircraft were also deployed to assist men and women on the ground. Several homes were evacuated as a precaution and a jeep belonging to the Lagoa fire station burned out in the blaze, but no one was injured.
