João Gomes Cravinho said during a debate on the government's proposal for the 2019 state budget at parliament that he believed the budget would be enough but said he was waiting for an assessment from a working group by the end of the year to see if a higher budget will be required.

The move is part of a government effort to avoid more tragedies caused by forest fires, which killed 114 people last year.

Portugal’s internal affairs minister recently revealed that the National Republican Guard (GNR) is to get another 300 officers for its prevention and rescue intervention squad, in an effort to combat deadly wildfires.
