In total, between 1 and 7 January, national authorities – the GNR and PSP police forces – registered 2,292 accidents on the country’s roads. This is 376 fewer accidents than during the same week of 2016, although more fatalities were involved.
More serious injuries (33) were also registered in the crashes than last year.
The figures were published by the ANSR national road safety authority, which collates input from the two police forces. Road deaths are defined as fatalities that happen at the scene of the crash or en-route to hospital.
According to ANSR, the district that registered the highest number of road fatalities last week was Aveiro, followed by Braga, Bragança, Faro, Leiria, Lisbon, Porto and Viseu.
Most accidents happened in Lisbon and Porto.
