The Beijing 2008 Olympics champion jumped 16.62m on his first jump but his second and third jumps were fouls. His only good jump landed him in sixth place, 20cm behind Azerbaijan’s Alexis Copello in first.

Évora, whose best distance this year is 17.05m, stands behind Spain’s Pablo Torrijos (16.79), France’s Jean-Marc Pontvianne(16.77), Greece’s Dimítrios Tsiámis (16.69) and Turkey’s Can Özüpek (16.66).

The triple jump final is scheduled for Sunday, from 7.55 pm local time (6.55 pm in Lisbon).
