The report stated that 2014 had thus seen a total of 1,220 new cases with 222 of these having already advanced from infection by the HIV virus to developing Aids.
Programme director António Diniz is quoted as saying that 2014 had seen Portugal “deepen the trend towards a decline in the number of new cases registering infection by the HIV virus” but that the country remained “far from the European average.”
The report adds that there remained “the trend for a slight decrease in the proportion of cases occurring among females” whilst there is a “progressively rising number of cases registered among men engaging in sex with other men.”
Diniz added that over the last 11 years, this latter population group had seen the number of HIV infected cases rise “by almost a half” with overall progress returned by the “notable decrease in the number of new cases of infection among users of injected drugs.” TPN/Lusa
