Hugo, from Lagos, and Sofia, from Lisbon, had moments earlier exchanged vows and were heading to their wedding breakfast, along with around 100 guests, when tragedy struck.
In total around 500 people were evacuated from the resort, which will remain completely shut down for the foreseeable future and has said the wedding couple will be reimbursed.
PJ police are investigating the cause of the fire.
Constructed primarily from wood, it didn’t take long for the flames to ravish the luxury ZMar eco-Resort’s main buildings on Saturday afternoon.
The fire is thought to have started in staff quarters and saw key areas such as the spa, kitchens and restaurant reduced to ashes.
Subsequent reports released later this week suggested a mobile phone that had been left charging could have ignited the blaze after it short-circuited.
According to newspaper Correio da Manhã, authorities have all but ruled out any possible criminal involvement in the incident.
The newspaper claims it took just 20 minutes for the flames to completely destroy the environmentally-friendly resort’s two main buildings.
It states the fire started after an employee left a mobile phone and a laptop computer plugged in an electrical socket to charge.
Suspicions are that the equipment may have short-circuited and caused the fire. Employees were due to be formally heard by PJ police detectives this week.
In related news, a fire in a building in Amadora, Lisbon, on Sunday afternoon, caused one death and left several people injured. A bedridden woman in her 80s died after going into cardiac arrest following the blaze on the first floor of a three-story building.
Several other residents including a weeks-old baby were injured in the fire.
And on Monday evening, in the Algarve, a large fire broke out in the Rasmalho area of the city of Portimão. The fire started in an area of scrubland at around 5pm and was extinguished by fire-fighters a couple of hours later.
This latest blaze comes just weeks after the massive fire in nearby Monchique. Some homes were surrounded by flames, but firefighters with the help of local residents, managed to protect all properties and animals under threat from the blaze.
More than 100 firefighters from various stations across the Algarve and three helicopters were involved in fighting the fire.
