According to national broadcaster RTP, the owner of the property lives abroad and did not have a licence to use the villa for such purposes.
Twenty-two elderly people reportedly paying up to €800 a month to stay in the three-storey property, were removed from it. Three employees, among them a cook, were working at the home at the time.
According to complaints and a former employee who quit, conditions at the home were degrading and precarious. Social security was allegedly warned about the set-up a year ago, but only now took action.

I live in Canada and I had to very quickly find a seniors home for my mom a couple months ago when my dad passed away. I assumed all homes were governed somewhat by the government, but I have since learned of horror stories, like this. I emailed the dept of social services through their website to inquire if there is a list one can reference of the legally operated homes (to reference if the one I chose is legal), to no avail. Does anyone know of where I can find such a list? The thought of my mom in one of these where she might get mistreated frightens me especially being so far away. Thank you!
