Oporto airport distinguished as third best in Europe

Oporto’s Sá Carneiro Airport has been chosen by the ACI – Airports Council International – as the third best airport in Europe, following Moscow (Russia), which took first place, and Zurich (Switzerland), in second.

Rounding off the top-five spots were Keflavik, Iceland’s main airport, in fourth, and Malta.
Jorge Ponce de Leão, president of national airport managing company ANA, said: “It was with pride that we learned that we have yet again been chosen by our passengers as one of the three best airports in Europe. This is our eighth prize in eight years and it is particularly important to us at this moment as Oporto Airport has reached the 6.4 million passengers served mark.”
The company said this latest achievement is the result of “a set of measures adopted by ANA to raise awareness through, and mobilise its resources and services rendered, to continuously improve passenger services.”

From 2006 to 2011 the Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport was consecutively ranked among Europe’s top-three best airports, having reached the top spot in 2007.
It is yet another string on Oporto’s bow after the city was last week elected the Best European Destination 2014, repeating its 2012 victory.
In a ranking based on votes cast by Europeans, the city won the coveted award as a result of its history, is architecture, culture, gastronomy, trade, encounters and discoveries. The unvanquished city is praised for knowing how to make visitors welcome, with Europe’s Best Destinations saying it will conquer your heart and leave a lasting impression, concluding that those who visit the northern city will find it hard to leave. Zagreb came in second, followed by Vienna in third. Portugal was the only country with two entries in the top ten, with Madeira said to be the sixth best destination to visit in 2014.
