Over 58,000 new cancer cases expected this year - WHO agency

Portugal will see over 58,000 new cases of cancer this year and more than 29,000 deaths from the disease, according to a newly released estimate from the cancer research arm of the World Health Organisation.

In a report released on Wednesday, the International Agency for Research on Cancer said that a quarter of Portugal’s population is at risk of developing cancer by the age of 75, with 10% of the population at risk of dying from the disease.

Colorectal cancer is set to account for the highest number of new cancer cases in Portugal this year, the report said, followed by breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Worldwide, the agency projects some 18 million new cases of cancer this year, and over 9.6 million cancer deaths.
