The debate on whether Carnival should be made a bank holiday has been scheduled for 18 January.
Carnival this year falls on Tuesday 28 February.
However, the proposal is unlikely to succeed as it does not form part of the ruling-Socialist party’s manifesto. The Socialists have already reintroduced four bank holidays since coming to power at the end of 2015.
The main opposition Social Democratic Party has meanwhile also drawn up a law decree proposal to have bank holidays moved to Mondays. The PSD argues that productivity has suffered with several public holidays falling on Tuesdays and Thursdays and such a move would serve to boost the nation’s economy.
Bank holidays which fall on Mondays and Fridays will remain unchanged under the proposal.
Holidays which fall on weekends will not be shifted to Mondays as is the practice in the United Kingdom.
