The former Lisbon Mayor said last week, after opening an extension of the Lisbon Metro, that city dwellers have to start getting used to living without their cars.
Prime Minister Costa added that greater investment was needed in public transport and that climate change would have a greater effect on the planet if people did not change their habits.
The Prime Minister had earlier this year made a similar call for people to ditch their cars after the industry complained over government fuel tax hikes and additional taxes on new cars.
António Costa made these remarks as he unveiled a new stretch on Lisbon Metro’s blue line, linking Sintra to the capital. The Reboleira station, which cost €60 million to connect to Amadora-East, was inaugurated last Friday.
It will now take passengers 19 minutes to make the underground journey between Reboleira and Marquês do Pombal.
The Lisbon Metro network now comprises 56 stations and covers 44.2 kilometres.

A Prime Minister showing real leadership, unlike the UKs Prime Minister who supports 'business-as-usual'!

That's all very well, but meanwhile ... everyone that lives inland from São João do Estoril and that used to drive down to the station and take the train to Lisbon for their commute is now faced with paying parking charges on the streets around the station. So what are you going to do? Well, might as well drive into Lisbon ...
