GNR police said the majority of those detained were charged with driving under the influence. Overall, 349 drivers were found to be over the legal limit, with about a third found with quantities at a level considered to be a crime.
In total, GNR officers pulled over more than 3,700 drivers in the 12-hour long nationwide operation.
In related news, GNR traffic police said they have recorded more accidents and more serious injuries, but fewer deaths, over the five days of their New Year operation when compared with 12 months ago. Figures show there were 588 accidents, with three fatalities and 10 serious injuries, though this year’s operation lasted one day more than that of last year’s festive period. Police also said they recorded 339 minor injuries from collisions.
