Portugal buys 1 and 2 cent coins from Ireland

Portugal has had to buy 1 and 2 cent coins from Ireland.

A shortage of small change saw the country import 272 million of the tiny brown 1 and 2 cent coins.

At the same time, it sold off 2.1 million 2 euro coins.

It was described as the ‘largest logistical operation’ involving coins since the end of the escudo.
