The Portuguese government would be extremely happy to be able to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and move its embassy there, because this would be the same day that it also recognised Jerusalem as the capital of the state of Palestine and moved its diplomatic mission from Ramallah in Palestine to Eastern Jerusalem, Augusto Santos Silva said.
The minister was speaking on the sidelines of a meeting of European foreign ministers after an informal breakfast with Israel’s prime minister and foreign minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, who challenged EU member states to follow the United States’ decision to transfer its embassy to Jerusalem.
