The EU’s statistical body found that there had been a steady rise in citizens aged between 16 and 74 acquiring products or services online, rising from 30 percent in 2007 to 53 percent in 2015 with Portugal in 2015 reflecting the European reality of eight years ago with 31 percent of Portuguese nationals shopping online.
This rate placed Portugal ahead of Romania (11 percent), Bulgaria (18 percent), Cyprus (23 percent) and Italy (26 percent) and level-pegging with Croatia.
Topping the list of online shoppers in 2015 were the United Kingdom (81 percent), Denmark (79 percent), Luxembourg (78 percent) and Germany (73 percent).
In turn, of the almost one-third of Portuguese citizens willing to take their credit cards online, the majority did so to purchase travel and accommodation (55 percent), followed by clothes or sports articles (49 percent) with books, magazines and newspapers (32 percent) making up the third largest category.
