Portugal has highest EU poverty rate

in Business · 11-05-2002 00:00:00 · 0 Comments

Almost a quarter of the Portuguese population (23 percent) are poor. This percentage hands Portugal the unenviable title of having the highest poverty rate within the European Union.

While Portugal has the highest number of poor EU citizens, a slight improvement will see it climb above Greece and the United Kingdom, both with poverty figures of 22 percent. These two countries are followed by Ireland (20 percent), and Spain and Italy (19 percent).
The lowest poverty rates in the EU are found in Denmark (eight percent), Finland (nine percent), Luxembourg and Sweden (12 percent).
These figures were released earlier this week in Lisbon during the presentation of a report titled, "The Strategy for the Fight Against Poverty and National Plans for Social Inclusion".
Developing the national labour market and publicising work as a right and an opportunity for all are some of the items included in this national plan against poverty.
