Portugal, through Cristiano Ronaldo, Renato Sanches, João Moutinho, Nani and Ricardo Quaresma scored all five their penalties to win 5-3 after the game had ended 1-1 after extra time, with goalkeeper Rui Patricio saving from Jakub Blaszczykowski.

The national team was forced into the lottery of a shoot-out after they failed to build on an equalising goal by Renato Sanches, who cancelled out a second minute goal by Robert Lewandowski, with Portugal once again failing to employ their destructive counter-attacking play against a defensively-orientated team.

In scoring, 18-year old Sanches became the youngest player to score in the knockout phases of the European championships.

Portugal, who have not lost a game in the tournament, have also failed to win any of their five games so far, becoming the first team to do so and reach the semi-finals of the Euros.

Portugal will next Wednesday face the winners of the match between Belgium and Wales who play Friday night.
