Portugal loses over 30,000 inhabitants in 2016

The number of inhabitants in Portugal fell by 31,757 people in 2016 compared to 2015, with the declining population trend continuing, despite slowing in the last three years.

According to figures published by the National Statistics Institute (INE), on 31 December of last year, the resident population in Portugal was estimated at 10,309,573 people, 31,757 fewer compared to 2015.

 

This translates into a negative growth rate of 0.31% and reflects a combination of deaths and births as well as migratory balances.

In the last seven years, the population of Portugal has fallen overall by 264,000, INE said.
