Joaquim Carreira was in Rome as a member of the Pontifical College from 1940 to 1954 with parliament highlighting a “man of great faith” with Carreira taking in those fleeing the Nazi occupation of the Italian capital as from September 1943.

Honoured by the Lisbon Synagogue earlier this month, parliament also praised the work of journalist António Marujo for his “excellent article” that had led to the investigation and recognition of Carreira by the Yad Vahsem Institute.
